About

My name is Steve Hamburg and my mission is to grow the bridge community.Soon after moving to North Carolina, my local bridge club - Charlotte Bridge Association (CBA) - needed a new Partnership Chair. I threw my name in the hat because I wanted to help the club, and also meet people.Playing a session of duplicate bridge is a big commitment: A commitment of at least 3 hours of time, and an even bigger intellectual commitment. And when playing bridge, few things are more frustrating than partnering with a player whose approach to the game is completely incompatible with your approach.Soon after assuming the Partnership Chair role for CBA, I gave a lot of thought about how I could find players who were very aligned with the way players seeking partners approach duplicate bridge. This is when I concluded that greater system compatibility among players would yield successful partnerships.I have been the Partnership Chair for CBA since February '25. I have successfully facilitated well more than 1,500 pairings, including facilitating partnerships and teams for CBA's Regional in '25.Thanks to receiving a great deal of ongoing help from my daughter, Bridge Matcher now automates what I had formerly done manually, and has been used by CBA since June '26.Give Bridge Matcher a try and see what you think!

How Bridge Matcher Works
Let's begin by first explaining how Bridge Matcher doesn't work:If you need a partner to play at a bridge club, you'll contact the person who manages partnerships and request a partner. In most instances, the Partnership Chair will pair you with whomever may be available to play, regardless of system compatibility or alignment of skill.
This is NOT how Bridge Matcher works!
Bridge Matcher finds partners based on system compatibility or system sophistication; it's your choice to decide which approach to apply for your partners.
System Compatibility explained:
Consider the scenario where you need a partner for the club game next Monday. Many players are available to partner with you, including John, Sue, Steve, Stacy, etc., as illustrated below.

Bridge Matcher compares all of the conventions you play with the conventions available players play and then ranks the results based upon overlap (i.e., system compatibility).

System Sophistication explained:
Consider the same scenario where you need a partner for the club game next Monday. The same players, John, Sue, etc., are available to partner with you.Bridge Matcher evaluates every player's bidding system and assigns point values to the conventions they play. The point values are then tallied across their entire bidding system, and suggested partners are ranked by their corresponding "scores". Higher scores correspond to greater system complexity / sophistication. You can then decide to select a partner based upon similar "scores". In the illustration below, you may choose to partner with either John or Sue since their scores are closest to your score of 100 points.
